Terms
Every Rolling Edition book is free to read, with no account. These terms cover the rest: accounts, memberships, reusing what you find here, and using the site.
Who we are
Rolling Edition is published by Distributed LLC, which sells memberships and receives what they pay. In these terms, “we” is Distributed LLC, doing business as Rolling Edition, and “you” is anyone who uses rollingedition.com. Write to us at hello@rollingedition.com.
Reading and reuse
Every book and every edition is free to read, for everyone, with no account and no paywall. Book text is CC BY 4.0: credit Rolling Edition, link back to the book and to the licence, and say what you changed. Code examples are MIT: keep the notice “Copyright (c) Rolling Edition and contributors” and the MIT terms with any code you copy. Each book's licences are in its repository on GitHub, and they govern how you may reuse it: nothing in these terms narrows them.
Changes you propose to a book through its repository carry a Developer Certificate of Origin sign-off, and you contribute them under that book's licences.
Code examples
Each edition's stamp says which versions its examples were run on, and when. The code comes with no warranty, as its MIT licence says. Read it before you run it, and run it where a mistake costs nothing: what it does on your machine and with your data is your responsibility.
Your account
You never need an account to read. If you make one, keeping your sign-in safe is up to you. You can delete your account at any time from your data, which lists what deleting removes and what it can't; the privacy page says what an account holds.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. If it holds a membership, the membership ends then, without a refund.
Memberships
A membership pays for keeping the books current. It never buys access: every book stays free to read for everyone.
- What it includes is listed on the membership page. What's listed there as coming next is planned, not promised.
- Prices, in US dollars: Supporter, $6 a month or $60 a year; Patron, $15 a month or $150 a year. Prices include any tax that applies. If our prices change, a membership you already have keeps its price until you change your plan.
- Renewal. A membership renews automatically at the end of each month or year, and Stripe charges the card you gave, until you cancel. If a renewal payment fails, Stripe tries again over the following days; your membership continues meanwhile, and ends if the payment never goes through.
- Cancelling and refunds. Cancel any time, for any reason. There are no refunds: a membership you cancel runs to the end of the period you've paid for, then stops. You cancel from your membership, with “Manage or cancel”. Deleting your account ends a membership at once, also without a refund.
- Payments are taken by Stripe, on its own page, so your card never reaches us. Stripe holds your payment details under Stripe's privacy policy.
- Your name. If you choose, your name appears on the supporters page and, for a patron, on the page of one book you back. You can take it down at any time, and it never appears in a book.
Using the site
Use the site, its feeds and its server for assistants as they're meant to be used. Don't try to get around their limits or their security, overload them, or use them to harm anyone. Don't pretend to be someone else, and say a section looks right only when you've checked it.
No warranty
We work to keep every book current and every example passing, and each edition's stamp says what was checked and when. Even so, the site, the books and the code are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows.
Liability
As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost data or lost profits, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before your claim.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. The date below says when they last changed. A change that affects your membership applies from its next renewal, and you can cancel before then.
The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, in the United States. Nothing in them takes away a right that the consumer law where you live gives you and doesn't let anyone take away.
